Welcome Maelee!

Hey guys!! :) Happy Thursday!

Getting back of the swing of things! Sweet baby Maelee came to see me at just 11 days new. She was an absolute dream! This red head little love slept her entire session and I was overjoyed with how her images turned out!

Mom and dad were such great helps during the session. Thanks for bring her by! -Sasha

Where has the time gone? It has been over 4 weeks since my last visit. But.... for GREAT reason. I took a vacation! Well several vacations back to back.

First....Kelseyville, California. I know most of you have no idea where this is, I didn't either. It is a small little sleepy town outside of Oakland. Some super amazing friends of mine flew me out to take some awesome photos of their family.

We had wine and loved on babies and dogs and it was super refreshing! I loved it.

Back to Louisiana for ONE day to pick up my son Gavin, then off to Los Angeles (home for me) to celebrate my beautiful grandmothers 70th birthday! It was a blast.  She is one sassy, hilarious lady and I am so so grateful for this trip.

Going home to Los Angeles is always blast! :)

Back to Louisiana to drop off my dear son who is now out of school for the summer (yippee) and off to an 8 day vacay in Honolulu to celebrate my fathers 55th birthday! Happy Birthday dad!

Hawaii is stunning! I woke up each morning at 5:30 am to catch the sunrise which was phenomenal!

This summer is full of travel and events. I am currently in Houston photographing a summit, Louisville is up next then of course Essence Fest in New Orleans! I hope you all have some awesome summer plans, look forward to seeing some of you this year!

Welcome Savannah Grace

What can I say? Look at this doll! when her mother, Shantell brought her in the studio I knew we were going to have a great session, AND WE DID! She was a dream. Just look at that gorgeous skin, hair and eyes.

Thanks for stopping by the studio Savannah Grace. <3 - Love Sasha

Welcome Hendrix

Have you ever seen such a sweet bundle of cuteness? For a small fry, Hendrix was a fighter. He always managed to get his tiny hand or arm out of the wrap. All that beautiful black hair and sweet brown skin just made me melt. Thanks for coming by the studio Hendrix, and bringing your awesome parents too! :) - Sasha

She is a complete natural in front of the camera!

Lily-Grace Harper Birth Session (live birth content)

This was by far one of the most beautiful and surreal sessions I have EVER captured. There is no other way to put it. I captured Ashley & Justin for their 1 year anniversary session, when they first found out they were expecting and again for their maternity portraits. They prayed for this little one.

Ashley's mom flew in for a whole month to be with her daughter and son-in-law. She and Justin's mom were there to witness the labor and birth of sweet Lily-Grace Harper. Ashley had three interchanging Doula's and was completely prepped for her 48 hours of labor, with their favorite music playing and flash cards for encouragement.

She was in and out of the birthing tub with help from her amazing husband Justin, practicing her breathing between contractions. Ashley chose a natural, drug-free labor. I was in and out of the hospital 4-5 times capturing special moments and finally on Sunday March 13th at 3:01pm Lily-Grace made her debut!

Welcome Lily-Grace Harper Smith! It was an honor capturing your birthday! -Sasha

Happy 1st Birthday Sweet Riley

When you turn one and your dad is an LSU omega and your mom is super creative. 😊 I love love love this session. Riley is so cute and he had a rough time warming up at first but once that cake came out...he let loose. I took his mom Brittneys maternity portraits as well as his 6 month portraits. Time sure does fly!

Happy first birthday Riley! - Love, Sasha

Happy 1st Birthday Kali!

Sessions like these make me wonder where the time has gone. I photographed Kalis mom, Dominee and her beautiful family when she was 8 months pregnant with Kali. And here we are over a year later!

I just love this color combo and that cake, goodness, could it get anymore perfect? I have been waiting to use this gorgeous teal, lace romper and Kali look super cute in it! Happy 1st birthday Kali! - Love, Sasha

Happy Birthday Sweet Natalee!

This was by far the messiest smash cake session I have ever done and I absolutely loved it! Natalee did not hold back!

She dug into her cake and danced around in her tutu like a true carefree one year old. I wish I were as care free as Natalee. :) Mom & dad looked on in amusement and afterwards ordered a huge canvas to commemorate. Love it!

Happy 1st birthday Natalee! - Sasha

Kayla & Lorenzo

Happy Monday guys! I hope you had an awesome weekend! I spent it busy, busy, busy. I had the opportunity to photograph a live, natural birth, can't wait to share that with you guys!

Up now! Kay;la & Lorenzo. What a fun, light, bubbly couple. These two were all smiles during their engagement session. Well-dressed and full of life, Kayla & Lorenzo made each other giggle the entire time. I really enjoyed these capturing them! I am sure they are looking forward to their upcoming nuptials.

Congrats Kayla & Lorenzo! - Sasha

Harper Lyric <3

Every now & then I get a little one in the studio that absolutely takes my breath away! This sweet little girl did just that. Harper took a while to warm up to me but once she did, what a joy.

Taking Back My Art....An open letter to existing & potential clients.

I love photography. Unequivocally. I am addicted to the transformation I see my images take from the camera to the final image I deliver. I love what I do. I love seeing the look on my clients faces when they get their gallery or the emails I get thanking me for their beautifully crafted images. This is the WHY. This is the reason for 16-18 hours days at my computer. The reason that sometimes I skip park days with my son or dinner dates with friends. I am dedicated to my work and to my clients.

Somewhere though, this is getting lost. At the root, I am a human. A mother, a sister, a friend. Photography is what I do, it is not who I am. I am happy to provide a service to my clients who trust me to capture and create beautiful images for them. And I am proud to do this. However, I feel there is a need to set some boundaries between who I am and what I do.

I am taking back my art.....

I am taking back my free time. I am taking back my social life. I am taking back my role as a mother to my son. No more missed park days, no more missed dinner dates with friends. There will be no more early morning text messages, or texts at all. There will be no 10pm phone calls inquiring about photographs. I will ask, with respect, that these boundaries be respected and honored.

We all have jobs. We all have families and friends. Some of us have children and some of our children have special needs. Mine is one. He is why I worked so hard to craft a flexible schedule so that I can dedicate more time and resources to him and he is not seeing the fruit of that labor.

I love photography.  I have a standard. I have a speciality. For the sake of my craft & my clients, I will not deviate from these standards. I will do my very best to accommodate requests within my speciality, if you request something that falls outside of my speciality I will do my best to refer you to someone who can help you.

I share this with you, humbly, in order to preserve my integrity and my art. So that I can wake up and create for the rest of my life and not feel burnt out.

Thank you to everyone for your respect, support & understanding.

My shame; The truth behind why I love maternity portraits.

9 years ago I was 22. I was in college, I was happy and working and felt whole. I had been in Louisiana just a few months shy of two years when I discovered I was pregnant. I found out very early on, four weeks in. I was sick, so sick. I experienced a myriad of feelings, excitement, nervousness, disbelief, everything I felt any woman, at any age would feel upon this big discovery. But my primary feeling was anxiousness. I knew I'd have to tell my parents & I knew they wouldn't be happy.

Upon divulging my new, big secret to my family, I felt such a sense of shame. It was suffocating how much shame I felt. There was no celebration; there were no plans being made for a baby shower. There were no mom/daughter shopping dates for little person things, there were no dad-to-be and grandpa putting cribs together, and there were no photos.

There were no photos......

If anything haunts me, it is that I did not document my pregnancy. I didn't get dressed up and put on a gown, get my hair and make-up done and traipse in front of a camera to have such a beautiful and special time captured. I was so ashamed of being young, black, unwed & pregnant. Was there anything worse? If there was, I didn't know it. I hid in my room for most of my pregnancy and watched tv. Never even dreaming of documenting such a shameful event. So I didn't. And it is one of the single regretful decisions I ever made.

You may be wondering why nine years later I am still dwelling on the photos that never were. Today I stumbled across a photo on Facebook that brought everything flooding back. An LSU student, I have no idea who she was, asked my sister if she thought I would be interested in taking a couple of photos. I had no idea what it was for other than it had something to do with twins and pregnancy.

They're not the best quality, but I am so thankful for my sister and that LSU student. She captured something for me that I was not brave enough to do for myself. Aside from these and a few other cell phone images, I have no documentation of my pregnancy.

Thus my love for maternity portraiture arises. If I had to select one singe part of my career as a photographer that I love best it would hands down be capturing the beauty and essence of an expecting mother. I am completely enamored by the strength and resilience of pregnant women to carry and birth beautiful beings with such grace. I love being a witness to the growth and am honored each time I am asked to capture such an experience.

Here I am, a proud, brazen mother of a brave & bold 8 year old. I may not have had my photos & my decision to have no more children may prevent me from ever doing so, but I have dedicated my career to making sure that any woman who wants to document her pregnancy can do so beautifully and affordably without shame.

Ashley + Justin + Baby

Seems like just  a short bit ago I was taking Ashley & Justin's 1st anniversary portraits and now they're expecting their baby girl in just two short weeks! Eek!

I really adore this sweet, young couple. We laugh and explore and they will do just about anything to get a great shot. I definitely appreciate that in clients. Ashley & Justin are full of love and life and I am so excited to capture their birth story next month!

See you soon baby Smith! -Sasha

Katrina + Roman

The great thing about traveling is that I get to see and visit with friends and family I haven't hugged in a long time. On my last visit to D.C. my childhood (elementary school) friend Katrina reached out and I was more than excited to head over and capture her and her sweet new guy Roman.

Roman is at that age where he loves his toes, my favorite stage! Don't let his quiet disposition fool you, he is very curious. He is currently teething and rolling all over to see everything. Super adorable. Thanks Katrina & Roman for letting me stop by!

The Rogers Family

Ok... I will admit. As a photographer, sometimes going into a clients home can be a bit scary. You have no idea what kind of conditions you are walking into and how adequate the lighting will be. As soon as I walked into to Brittany's home I immediately smiled knowing I was in good hands.

Her sweet & energetic 4 year old daughter, Taylor greeted me, immediately giving me all the details on her brand new baby sister, Rilee. Rilee was a dream, slept the entire session, even through multiple wrap changes. Could not have asked for a better newborn.

The rogers family exuded love and warmth and everything nice. Brittanys parents Dereck and Tracey were absolutely amazing and I could not get over how youthful they were. I look forward to working with this amazing family agains soon! -Sasha
