Important Update for All Clients

Starting immediately cakes will no longer be provided for cake smash sessions. -- Due to food service regulations Green Tangerine Photography will no longer be providing cakes for any portrait sessions.

Don't worry! You can still have a beautiful cake for your little ones birthday portraits. You will coordinate with one of my bakers and can pick up the cake and bring it to the studio.

While I realize this is an additional step in an already busy day this is ultimately for the protection of your child.

This update applies to all clients who book after today. Any previous clients who have already placed a retainer and booked a future date must sign a non-liability waiver in which CLIENT agrees to indemnify and hold harmless PHOTOGRAPHER for any liability related to accidents or reactions involving food product during the session or afterwards, there will be no exceptions regardless if you are a new or a returning client.

Refusal to sign the liability waiver will result in the cancellation of your session and refund of your retainer.

It is from here on out the sole responsibility of the CLIENT to inform the PHOTOGRAPHER of any allergies upon booking. The PHOTOGRAPHER will not be held liable in the event that a child is found to be allergic to any of the ingredients used to make the cake or items the cake/ingredients may have come in contact with.

Thank you for your understanding.

Photo rights and licensing; Helping you understand

Should you choose to purchase a usage license to any of your image theses are important things you NEED to know.

(see full article here)

Who owns the photo?

Photos and images are intellectual property. As such, photo ownership starts and almost always stays with the photographer.

“Hiring” a photographer doesn’t change the ownership.

So, what if you hire a photographer? Won’t this mean the photos belong to you?

Actually, no. Even when hiring a photographer for a dedicated photo shoot, the employment is typically a contractor relationship. Therefore the photographer will still be the owner of the resulting photos. The photographer may grant you an unlimited license for these photos, but legal ownership stays with the photographer.

Only if a staffer takes photos on the job, using your equipment, and on paid company time, will you, the employer, be considered the owner of the photos.

Your photo license is for you (not your contractors or the media).

So, as we mentioned earlier, professional photographers never sell a photo. Rather, they grant you permission (license) to use it. When licensing a photo, you do not own it.

You also do not have the right to give the photo to a third party to use. This is a very common misunderstanding. Say you’re an architect, and you paid a photographer to shoot your latest custom home, and you received a very open license to use those photos. A magazine calls and asks if they can use your photos in a story they’re running about you. The answer is a big NO. While you could use those photos in a print ad in said magazine, the magazine becomes the user of the photo when they are using it for their own editorial. So they should be negotiating their own license with the photographer. In the same example, if the builder who constructed your beautiful custom home asks for copies of those photos for his portfolio, the answer is also NO. The photo license is for you and you only.

How you use the photo often affects the price.

By purchasing a license, you are paying to use a photo in a very specific way. The photo’s permissions detail exactly how you can (and can’t) use the photo. Some permissions are very restrictive and are tied to a particular medium (i.e.: one regional magazine ad, one direct mail piece, one video, one television commercial, or a billboard at a single address), a particular time frame, or based on a number of views. Some permissions are for editorial use only (not advertisements for printed marquees). Or, permission may be more general (giving you free rein to use the photo on your website and in any emails you send).

The photo isn’t exclusively yours to use (unless you pay extra).

In most cases, when buying an image from a stock agency, you will be granted non-exclusive rights for that photo. This means that this photo may be legally found on many other sites, billboard, direct mail pieces, or newspaper ads. Some agencies will offer to sell you exclusive rights, or semi-exclusive rights (often based on a geographic region). You definitely pay more for this type of exclusivity.

Updates + Events

Good morning all! Happy Monday to you. I actually really love Mondays. I didn't used to but they have clearly worked their way to becoming my favorite day of the week. I can always get so much work done on Mondays and it is a fresh start to the week!

This week is especially exciting because I get to spend some time with Justin of JM Smith Design + Branding, answering questions about entrepreneurship and sharing my journey getting here. This is an intimate networking event for young entrepreneurs to be ignited, encouraged, and inspired by others who have fought through fear to pursue BOLDNESS in business.

I'll be sharing lots of information about the steps I took when I left my 9-5 and transitioned into successfully owning my own photography studio. Complete truth & transparency of what it takes and what it looks like to be an entrepreneur.

If you'd like to attend  you can purchase a ticket here:

Also coming up in May I have my annual Photography 101 course. Seats went on sale last week and currently there are 5 seats left. This class is perfect for aspiring photographers and those who have been shooting for a little while.

Photographers everywhere would like you to please stop doing this one thing...

When you hire a photographer it is because you see something in their work that you love. Something about the quality of their imagery that captures your attention. This quality takes time to perfect. Lots of time, years & years. We spend countless hours perfecting our craft. We take pride in our work. We enjoy seeing our work shared and liked and favorited across the web, it truly is an honor, but....please stop adding filters to our work.

I love Instagram as much as the next person. Many of you found my work through hashtags on Instagram. IG is a great marketing tool and aren't we all lucky for this amazing free service. But I wish they would have never created these god awful filters. They have become such a sore spot for photographers everywhere.

Have you ever painted your home? You go to the store, pick out the paint, have it mixed and it is perfect! You love it. You spend hours of labor painting, layer after layer until you get it right. Then imagine someone coming to your house and painting over your beautiful paint job. They did not do a good job at all, and you hate it, it doesn't reflect all your hard work. This is how we feel. It is heartbreaking. And it happens way too often.

Example of what we see when you filter our images.

Example of what we see when you filter our images.

Creative Market posted a really great blog about things photographers cringe at and this was on the list.

In my contract it states that adding any filter of any kind is against my terms. I know you may think "But the photos are of me, why can't I do what I want?" At the end of the day we, artists own our intellectual property and when you agree to a contract you are agreeing that you will not alter the images in any way and that often includes adding filters and cropping the image. Going forward I will not work with anyone who violates these terms, whether you are an established client or not. I will refer you to another photographer who will likely not want to work with you either.

Guys, it really comes down to common courtesy, and respect. We work really hard. We obsess over our work. we spend tons of money on software and equipment JUST for you. We want to please you, we want you to be happy with our quality of work & in return we only ask that you value our work by not defacing our pictures.

Be thoughtful, be respectful.

PhotoTherapy/Personal Photography Mentoring

Hey guys, happy hump day! For those of you who do not know, I provide personal mentoring for those looking to advance their photography skills.

I receive a lot of inquiries about teaching/mentoring and I wanted to put together something cumulative and filling to offer to those interested in learning more about photography and the art of the business.

I had my very first PhotoTherapy Photography Mentoring workshop on May 28th and it was a hit, the feedback was incredible! So I decided to hold another class this fall on September 24th for those who could not attend the spring class.

The course includes:

Starting Out: How to navigate a new industry

What's in the Bag? Gear talk (An in depth discussion on camera, lenses and other gear you'll need.)

Branding & Design: Developing Your Brand and how to cultivate your own style.

Editing & Style: An introduction to Photoshop & Lightroom (you also get free photoshop actions)

Q & A in which you get to ask any question you like.

The class is about 3 hours and includes breakfast refreshments and lunch.

My very first students! They were all amazing and I loved working with them!

In addition to the PhotoTherapy workshop this fall, I also offer one on one mentoring to those who might need a little more hands on and individual instruction.  I offer full disclosure on any and all questions related to photography, marketing, business, studio building, work/life balance, sales, and more!

Sessions are conducted in person, via skype, or by phone, whichever you prefer.

I will offer honest, objective and specific feedback; Identify weaknesses and priority areas that need
adjustment while offering a number of solutions and options for improvement.

Take advantage of the classroom setting by securing your seat in the PhotoTherapy workshop on September 24th or book your very on personal mentoring session by emailing me today!

Where has the time gone? It has been over 4 weeks since my last visit. But.... for GREAT reason. I took a vacation! Well several vacations back to back.

First....Kelseyville, California. I know most of you have no idea where this is, I didn't either. It is a small little sleepy town outside of Oakland. Some super amazing friends of mine flew me out to take some awesome photos of their family.

We had wine and loved on babies and dogs and it was super refreshing! I loved it.

Back to Louisiana for ONE day to pick up my son Gavin, then off to Los Angeles (home for me) to celebrate my beautiful grandmothers 70th birthday! It was a blast.  She is one sassy, hilarious lady and I am so so grateful for this trip.

Going home to Los Angeles is always blast! :)

Back to Louisiana to drop off my dear son who is now out of school for the summer (yippee) and off to an 8 day vacay in Honolulu to celebrate my fathers 55th birthday! Happy Birthday dad!

Hawaii is stunning! I woke up each morning at 5:30 am to catch the sunrise which was phenomenal!

This summer is full of travel and events. I am currently in Houston photographing a summit, Louisville is up next then of course Essence Fest in New Orleans! I hope you all have some awesome summer plans, look forward to seeing some of you this year!

Gallery Installation at Womans Hospital

I am so excited to announce that you can now find my images placed in the halls of Womans Hospital Physician Towers in Baton Rouge, LA thanks to Dr. Pamela Lewis! Last fall , my amazing client Ariesha reached out me and asked if I'd be interested in having some of my work placed in Dr. Thomas's office and of course I was over the moon excited. This is a wonderful opportunity & I thank my clients for letting me share their little ones with everyone.
